1.0 – Introduction
» If you have a slow computer then you know how annoying the lag on Runescape can be. With it, you are not only unable to enjoy the full “Runescape experience” because playing in HD is impossible, but you also have to take the constant risk of losing items whenever you play PvP or do monster killing because you might unexpectedly lag out, leaving your character defenseless. Also, when you lag constantly, its hard to go on other sites/have other programs running while you’re playing RS. The time it takes to exit out of your browser can be painstakingly long, too.
» This guide will show you five different ways that you can reduce lag on Runescape. __________________________________________________________________________
2.0 – Switch to Google Chrome
» I’ve tested Runescape on Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox and Google Chrome and, even though I’m a die-hard fan of Firefox, I can’t deny that Google Chrome is the best browser if you’re experiencing lag problems. Once you switch (click here to download), you’ll see how much of a difference it makes. Exiting out is quicker, too.
» Oddly enough, A few people have reported problems with Google Chrome and Runescape. I’m not sure why this is, but my recommendation for those of you who are having problems is to try switching to Opera, which I have found to be second best for Runescape.
3.0 – Boot your computer into ‘Safe Mode’
» If your computer is running slow but has ran faster previously, it’s often because it’s boggled down by programs that are running in the background, such as anti-spyware programs or even viruses. If this is the case for you, try booting your computer into Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, only the essential programs are ran, so all those programs and processes that normally slow don’t your computer won’t be there. This is a quick fix, of course – the best thing to do would be to clean out some of the unnecessary programs (see 4.0).
» If you don’t know how to Boot your computer into Safe Mode, just follow these steps: (1) Turn off your Computer. (2) Hit the ‘ON’ button on your computer and then immediately start hitting F2 F8 F10 or F12 or Escape (it all depends on what kind of computer you have. Just hit all of them if you don’t know what it is for you). (4) A screen will come up giving you the option to boot into Safe Mode, press ‘ENTER’ on your keyboard. (5) Wait patiently while it loads up.
4.0 – Clean out Your Computer
» If you’re computer was running faster before but has gotten slower over time, it can be cleaned out to make it faster again; there are a variety of different ways of doing this.
The most effective method is to back up important files (you can store them on your Ipod or a flash drive) and then completely wipe your hard drive and reinstall the essential stuff (you should have a disk somewhere that you can use to reinstall it).
» You can also switch to a Linux Operating System. Some distributors, such as Ubuntu, will send you a ‘live disk’ 100% free that you can put into your computer and it will lead you through the steps of wiping your old hard drive and installing the new Operating System.
» There are, of course, less extreme, but perhaps not as effective, methods of cleaning out your computer. Try deleting old Programs and Files that you don’t use (Glary Utilities, a free program, is helpful for doing this) and then run an Anti-Spyware/Virus program – I highly recommend any/all of the following free programs: Spybot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes anti-malware and Combofix. Make sure you don’t install any anti-virus software that always runs in the background – if you already have something like this, you should uninstall it since that type of program always drastically reduces the speed of your computer (Make sure not to enable TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy).
5.0 – Use Task Manager
» Windows Task manager is a very simple way to make Runescape a little less laggy while running other programs. Just set the Runescape and Java processes to ‘High’ and the other processes (for example: Itunes) to low. If Runescape is still laggy after this, though, you’ll just have to settle with running one program at a time.
» Open up Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del at the same time or by right-clicking the task bar and then pressing the ‘Task-Manager’ option. Press the ‘Processes’ tab. Right click the process and then from there you can either set it’s priority to High or Low or close the program/process quickly by pressing the ‘End Process Tree’ option.
6.0 – Buy A New Computer
» If you’re computer is older than 8 years, you really ought to buy a new one. Most older computers just can’t handle Runescape well, even if they’re in perfect shape. Of course, you don’t have to get a brand new one. If you look around, you can find good desktop computers that are only a few years old for around $100, whether from friends or online.
